Most anglers dream of snagging that trophy trout! Most come home with an award winning story of "the one that got away." But, for Sean Konrad, Tom Healy, Ron Campbell, and Roger Hellen, it has been more than a dream! September, 2009, Konrad set the new World Record for rainbow trout with a whopping 48 lb monster! In the same month, only a week later, Heally set the current World Record for brown trout with an impressive 41 pounder! But, this record was soon broken in June, 2010 by Campbell. Amazingly enough, on July 16, 2010, that record was once again broken by Hellen with a brown at 41 lb 8 oz. It was a great year for Brown. Catching a trout of this size takes great knowledge of bait, reels, rods, feeding habits, and habitat of the fish you are targeting. But, "How can I come home with more than a whopper of a story?" you ask. What techniques can I try for trophy trout fishing?
There are many different lures to try when fishing for that trophy trout. Most trout fishermen know that the larger trout eat small fish. The bigger specimen of trout commonly feed on smaller fish like minnows. While it is important to remember this fact when aiming for a bigger trout, it is also important to remember that insects make up a good percentage of any sized trout's diet. So, although using a spinner that resembles the movements of a small fish is a smart lure to try, you should also be prepared with other types of bait like large live insects. Some other live bait choices to consider when fishing for trophy trout are a piece of sucker fish or crayfish. Live crayfish setup on size 8 gang hooks is a great option to try.
Some anglers troll their lures as apposed to casting them. Casting can help you get the lure in a more precisely targeted area without causing unnecessary commotion from your boat trolling. This noise could potentially alert the trout to your presence. With the right equipment, an angler can cast long distances. This tactic will help when aiming for bigger trout as they have excellent sight at short distances. So, the farther away you are from the bait, the better. The bigger trout usually occupy the deeper waters but usually move to shallow water when they want to eat. Around 40 ft is the maximum depth to try when casting with a heavy spoon. You want to reach the areas where the larger trout may be, but you don't want to go so low that your spoon is constantly getting stuck in rocks and plants.
