When you commit to wrapping guides on a rod you open up a whole new world of materials, tools, jigs, chemicals and self imposed head aches. The fun part is getting right down to spinning your thread of choice around that blank and seeing your wrapping project come to life.
For those that do not partake in this experience it would seem to them that one must be a bit nuts to spend the time squinting and cussing their way through a rod wrapping project. Once started, however, the wrapper has a sense of creative well being that is akin to an artist delving into a new painting of their favorite subject.
Patience, a steady hand, good eyesight, some wrapping techniques learned and a touch of artistic talent will be the ingredients needed for a successful run at wrapping a rod. The supporting needs, such as a place to perform this activity, materials and tools all will be thrown into the mix. If your fortunate this will all fall into place and a great looking rod will be the proof of the pudding, so-to-speak.
Once you choose a spot to perform the actual wrapping activity be sure it is well lit. If you have eyesight that needs a boost, get a head magnifier. It is presumed that the rod sections/blanks are nearby along with the appropriate guides and hook keeper.
Since you know what color you want your wraps all you need to do is select the type of thread then the weight of that thread and finally the manufacturer of that thread. Since there are a whole lot of choices and combinations all I can say to you is buy a very good quality thread and match its size with the type of rod your going to wrap. Delicate, old school bamboo may call for a fine gossamer silk. A hefty Spey rod may call for a heavy nylon.
Once wrapped your next step will be to apply a finish coating to your wraps. There are several choices here. Dipping, painting and dripping are a few of the application processes.
Coatings of epoxy, shellac, varnish, urethane and a multitude of other specialty products, developed just for coating thread wraps, are some of your major choices.
Be prepared to combat the enemy, DUST, it will become a major priority.
It is evident there is a lot to rod wrapping and only a rod wrapper can fully appreciate what it takes to complete a good quality wrapped rod. Manufacturers of production rods automate the complete wrapping process and, for a production rod, that is appropriate. However, when someone hand builds a rod, automation would not even come close to satisfying a real rod builder or the buyer of a custom built rod.

Anglers Book Supply Co 0Mir000500 Art Of Spey Casting $63.38 Learn the basic and advanced Spey Casting techniques for both Single and TwoHanded Rods. Watch and learn as 17 of the world s best casters share their styles and skills through multicamera coverage of easytofollow demonstrations on rivers in actual fishing situations. Chapters include: 13 detailed demonstratons of spey casting techiques; and 6 Bonus Chapters that include an interview with Mel Krieger; a fun look behindthescenes; a casting competition; and interviews with manufacturers/sponsors involved in the production. DVD 3 hours 30 min. One very important point to remember is that spey casting is a style of casting utilized by both single and doublehanded rod casters. There are a growing number of people today who fish in rivers throughout the east west (Montana Pennsylvania North Carolina Maine Oregon Florida Colorado California etc.) who no longer use the standard roll cast. Instead they use spey techniques that allow for powerful casts when there is no room for a normal backcast. In fact many people today are not using a normal backcast ever (even if they have room) because spey techniques have proven so effective. There s lots here for the beginner and those who already love either or both of these casting elements and want to learn advanced techniques and styles. What sets this DVD apart from all other Spey videos out there is the truly professional composition editing and cameraworkand the fact that it was done out of a love for the sport with several demonstrators dontating their time. Sequences shot at the beautiful Golden Gate Angling and Casting Club in San Francisco and on rivers around the world.NARRATOR: Lani Waller. INTRODUCTION: Simon GawesworthWHAT EXPERTS ARE SAYING: This DVD shows the most comprehensive gathering of expert single and twohanded rod casters/instructors I ve ever seen in my life. What a great way to watch and learn the amazing variety of spey casting methods. Steve Raje |
